Are flood mitigation projects working in Melaka, asks state PN chief

Melaka Mayor Dr Yadzil Yaakub has criticized the state government’s efforts to reduce flooding after several areas were hit by floods recently.

Yadzil said there have been many incidents of flooding in many parts of Melaka this year, damaging infrastructure, causing huge financial losses and disrupting the Visit Melaka 2024 campaign. He said that despite the fact that the country is entering the monsoon season and is experiencing extreme weather conditions, the state government does not seem to have a specific plan to deal with flooding.

“It is unlikely that the state will have the funds to improve the drainage system. “It is illogical to announce a multi-million ringgit investment in Malacca without addressing the flooding issue,” he said in a statement.

“Why do government agencies seem to be so ineffective in addressing these problems? “Have we allocated enough funds to solve this never-ending problem?”

On Saturday, Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof said seven flood mitigation projects are underway in Melaka at a cost of RM1 billion.

Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy and Water Resources, was in Alor Gajah to witness the handover of the Water and Irrigation Department to the state government during the Alor Gajah Municipal Council.

The completed projects, with a total cost of RM28.6 million, include the coastal protection works at Sungai Baru and Sungai Punggor, the Telok Gong Coastal Erosion Prevention Project and the Hydrological Telemetry Station for Phase 2 of the National Flood Forecasting and Warning Programme. .
